Night Air Descending by T.P. Graf is an insightful, entertaining return to Jaime Cruz, now a "gen-u-ine" cowboy in West Texas. If you're familiar with the "I'm a mess"/"But you're my mess" exchange from the first book featuring Jaime, Tumbleweed and Dreams, you'll be glad to know it shows up in this sequel, where we catch up with the characters. Jaime takes a chance and tries to contact his distant family, and Brett is still not living up to his parents' expectations--instead seeming to fall away from his family, including his children. The character of Sallie returns, offering lightheartedness and love of nature--qualities that still offer foundation and inspiration to future generations and "the boys". Betsy struggles to come to terms with how she pushed her son out and wishes for a way to correct it, even going as far as saying there should be a Bible parable about a prodigal mother as well.

Fans of the story and characters, and new readers alike, will find familiar comfort in rejoining Jaime's life journey as he handles roadblocks and maneuvers the unexpected twists and turns with the family that took him in and accepted him. You'll get to know the characters in a deeper way in this follow-up, and you'll find serious themes and possibly a more social-issues approach by the author in this one. As in the first book, readers will get the sense that they are getting to know real people, not just fictional characters. You can really appreciate the nuanced characteristics Graf gives Jamie and the others. And his instincts for setting and culture pull everything together. Whether you're in the mood for a slice-of-life drama or a study of eclectic characters, Night Air Descending by T.P. Graf is a memorable read.
