No Second Chances is a work of non-fiction in the criminal justice genre and was penned by author C. Kyle Sherrod. Written for adults due to its thematic content and descriptions of graphic violence, this is a true story which explains the experiences of the author when he was imprisoned for robbery, and also the new realizations and traumas that he went through even after being released. The work not only describes the true atmosphere and goings-on of the world behind bars for convicted prisoners, but it also asks important questions about the United States justice system and the impact that prison has on life in society after release.

Being an outsider to the United States justice system, it was so interesting to read about the experience from a point of view that is inside prison life and having to endure its harsh conditions. Author C. Kyle Sherrod offers honesty and a no-holds-barred approach to his exposition, giving us his truth with raw narration that feels like you’re being told the story by the author in the room with you. This makes it hard to read some of the more harrowing moments, but the story is so worthwhile to understand the difficulties that prisoners go through in retaining their connection to the outside world, and in trying to rejoin it after release against a system that seems determined to return them to their cells again. Overall, No Second Chances is a harrowing and important book for readers who want to see an authentic and personal point of view on the American justice system.
