Nobody Told Me: Love in the Time of Dementia: A Memoir by S.R. Karfelt revolves around the topic of dementia and is a good read for all those who are dealing with dementia patients at home and in the workplace. The book tackles the author’s relationship with Gummy, her mother-in-law before and after she was diagnosed with dementia. It is the heartrending story of how strong their bond is despite the disease. The author’s honest admission of not knowing how to deal with a dementia patient and her daily challenges in dealing with the crisis are a reflection of the determination of two strong-willed women. This tribute by the author to her mother-in-law is a memoir of hope, trust, love, laughter, friendship, and tears.

‘Has a stinky dog ever crawled onto your lap, leaving more fur on you than on his body when he scampered away? Have you ever loved someone without expecting anything in return? Love is messy and it makes your heart bleed, but that’s no reason not to love. Nobody told me that, but Gummy showed me.’ The author’s honesty when it comes to her struggles in dealing with Gummy is real and relatable and makes this story palpable to many readers who are dealing with dementia patients. The author has also knitted in some humor in the memoir by revealing the craziness and mess in her life, and the element of depression she undergoes is tangible to readers in many places. The love and care of a daughter-in-law given to a mother-in-law is wonderful and will capture the hearts of readers.
