Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times - Volume 1, by Pam Gittleman, is a children’s picture book for young readers, ages three and up. It is filled with colorful illustrations and written in a poetic format for a read-along. But instead of a story you might normally find in a book such as this, it is divided into eight different sections: each a nursery rhyme tweaked a bit to change the overall theme of the old ones. They include: Three Kind Mice, Ring Around Sweet Roses, Humpty Dumpty, Hey Little Diddle, Baa Baa Bright Sheep, Hickory Dickory Dock, London Rain is Falling Down, and Jack and Jill. The messages within each rhyme emphasize topics such as kindness, empathy, and gratitude.

The old rhymes I grew up with didn’t have much of a message. They were more like silly words that sounded similar. But this book is different. It has a purpose with reason and thought in it. But what I also like is that the rhymes are not preachy or heavy-handed. They come out sounding positive. The book is interactive in that after each rhyme, there is a question that is asked. For example, why is it cool to bring roses to your teacher or grandma? Along with the questions, the book asks the reader to point to an emoji that would reflect the feelings of the one on the receiving end. This is helpful to develop empathy for others. Each time I read Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times by Pam Gittleman, I get more out of it. This book will be a valuable addition to any library and comes highly recommended.
