Oblivion Awaits: Infinita Book 1 by Christopher Hopper is a dystopian science fiction thriller set in the aftermath of an environmental event that decimated Earth and most of all things living on it. Those that remain are still on borrowed time, but the deep ideological divisions on what to do next, where, and with whom, have forced everyone to take sides. At its most basic, the societal structure is broken down into Politicasts, with the primary schools of thought being [1] stay on Earth and fix it, [2] leave Earth for space, [2a] leave Earth for space and seek ET help to do so, and [3] do nothing and stop everyone else from doing anything. Members are tattooed with the caste they identify with and there is a gang mentality throughout. Two main point of view characters, among many, are an unpopular pilot named Jericho on Earth, and a space station leader named Evie who is accountable for a catastrophe that had never, ever happened before. Jericho's and Evie's lives intersect unexpectedly and in terrifying, deadly ways.

You're going to have to bear with me for a minute while I unpack Oblivion Awaits. And by unpack, I mean raze the entire baggage claim at Heathrow. Christopher Hopper has written a fantastically creative and wholly engrossing science fiction thriller. The pacing is at light-speed and for as many characters and perspectives as we get, it is a testament to his skill that we can suss them out. Evie is my favorite and the scenes that take us to the space station with more humans on board than the entire population of Iceland are the best. She's been done dirty by those who aim to shut the option of life on Earth down and it's her neck on the line, along with the lives of hundreds of thousands of other people. My other favorite is an enigmatic character named Jack who is a stealthy and almost omniscient baddie, but one of those characters where you question your philosophy on the “If loving you is wrong” cliché. On a more personal note, the caste system brought on a heated debate at my dinner table, and while there were no actual tattoos, I have been cleared to admit that a Sharpie pen made an appearance. Spoiler alert: Only the 4-year old wanted alien assistance. Very highly recommended.
