Oh Stella! by Maryann Katterjohn is a children’s picture book about a lovable, but rambunctious Beagle. Stella was rescued from an animal shelter by Aunt Mary and immediately won her heart, as well as the love of neighborhood children. But, being a Beagle, Stella also has a rowdy side, much to Aunt Mary’s frustration. Stella gets into the garbage, jumps on the furniture, and tries to escape from her home. But Aunt Mary takes Stella to “doggy school,” where she learns to act appropriately. The book is illustrated throughout with drawings by Annie Roth. The book is based on a true story about the author’s own Beagle who she rescued. Katterjohn adds that all author and illustrator royalties from the book are being donated to animal adoption causes.

Oh Stella! by Maryann Katterjohn is a charming book. I laughed out loud at some of Stella’s capers, such as jumping on a kitchen counter and eating a cake. The author doesn’t say what ages the book is aimed at, but children who are just learning to read would love it, and those who haven’t yet learned would appreciate having it read to them. Katterjohn uses rhyming throughout the book, which adds to its enjoyment, and the drawings by Annie Roth perfectly illustrate the text. My children would have enjoyed this book and Stella’s adventures when they were young, and readers of all ages will delight in it. I highly recommend this wonderful tale to all children, their parents, and their grandparents.
