Author Biography

My writing journey started in my early teens, and I've dabbled in several genres over the years since.

Inspiration comes from the oddest places. The germ of the idea for On Ravyn's Wing came from a picture of The Pirates of the Caribbean's Elizabeth Swan wielding a sword. So, yes, why not a lady pirate as a heroine? Then came the other characters, and a general plot line. Music is also my muse's joy, so I listened to lots of pirate themed instrumentals while I worked. I loved the idea of time travel and using some of my own country's history, and so the tale was born.

I live in Central Ontario, Canada, under a not-so-secret alter ego with my husband and a bossy cat. (She's not much help when I'm trying to focus.) My favorite hobbies are needlework, jewelry making, and of course, reading. Lots of reading.

On Ravyn’s Wing is a work of romantic fiction in the paranormal and time travel genres, and was penned by author Mary-Lynn Cordero. Forming the opening novel in the Sidesteps Through Time series, this first story focuses on history professor Farrel McQuaid, a mild-mannered man with a passion for reading about days gone by. But when Farrel finds himself slung backward into 1813, the cutthroat life of piracy is far from his home comforts. Here he meets Ravyn Flynt, a fierce woman pirate who’s fought harder than most for her captaincy. Though the unlikely pair begin to bond, they both have their own quests to fulfill, which may eventually tear them apart for good.

Written for adults due to its explicit sexual situations, this is a deceptively wholesome romance set amid some of the most violent times in world history on the high seas. Farrel is a gentle soul with modern sensibilities, and it was really interesting to see such a great role reversal with Ravyn taking the powerful and violent alpha role with gusto. Both characters are exceedingly well-drawn, their motivations and emotions expertly put forward through dialogue and narration. Author Mary-Lynn Cordero also takes time to fully develop the other plotlines around the relationship, making a fully realized story with tales of vengeance, acceptance, secrets, and of course romance. Overall, On Ravyn’s Wing offers something quite unique in the romance reading experience, and comes highly recommended for fans of historical crossovers, strong female heroines and thrilling revenge stories.

“I was caught in a storm, but instead of driving me to a different place, it dumped me in a different time.” On Ravyn's Wing (Sidesteps Through Time, Book 1) by Mary-Lynn Cordero, 34-year-old Professor Farrel McQuaid is in Nova Scotia, his last stop for his book tour before heading home to Toronto. While exploring the nearby coastline, a freak storm transports him back in time to 1813. Taken prisoner by privateer Captain Ravyn Flynt and her crew, Farrel has no choice but to join them and adapt to life at sea. At the same time, he’s irresistibly attracted to Ravyn, whose goal is to exact revenge on the pirate who has taken so much from her. When Farrel finds out about her past, he has to face his own hurtful memories.

Time travel is a subject that never fails to fascinate me, and Cordero used this element well in the first installment of Sidesteps Through Time. With a brief reference to Pirates of the Caribbean, the characterization and settings are solid and highly imaginable with Cordero's clear and engaging narrative. The plot was more extensive than I anticipated but On Ravyn's Wing is no doubt a gripping read. The swashbuckling element is properly handled to let protagonists Ravyn and Farrel’s relationship shine. However, both are burdened by their past and present situations, especially Ravyn’s responsibility as a captain of which she is harshly reminded by her senior crewman, Mr. Fisher. After all they’ve been through, will Farrel stay or return to his own time? All in all, fans of the genre will find this a fine read.
