On my fifth birthday, I would have told you that I wanted to be a clown when I grew up, because I wanted to smile and laugh for a living. Four days later, I watched my older brother get hit by a car and die. Since that day, I wanted to write children’s books for a living. I knew books could bring joy and understanding to kids like me who had lost a loved one. Books could also inspire any reader to live with purpose and to not take life for granted, without having to first learn the hard way through trauma and grief.
My brother’s death made me ask life’s big questions when I was still in preschool, “Why did he die? Why did he live at all? What was the purpose of his life and his death? What is the purpose of my life and all life in general.” I found answers in books meant for adults.
I wrote this book to answer my children’s questions about God, Heaven, spirituality and the purpose of life. I believe no matter your faith, every child should be empowered to choose their own path, and every child should believe in their power to choose love in every moment.
One Wave makes these concepts of spirituality, manifestation, universal oneness and love simple and accessible to young kids.

One Wave: A Little Book of Oneness by Lauren Martin is a children’s picture book about how everything and everyone is connected by energy. The narrative has a wonderfully simplistic approach that will be able to help connect young readers to the message being delivered by the author. At the end of the book, Lauren Martin explains her relationship with spirituality and her journey that started at a very young age.
Lauren Martin’s One Wave opened my eyes in many ways. For one, it felt like a literal sign that I was on the right path, and to keep forging ahead. On another level, I viewed it as a beautifully crafted “letter” to the world of how we are meant to live and how we are meant to treat others. The book is going to appeal to readers of all ages, not just young developing minds, but also those with much older hearts. The best kind of book you can read to a child is one that opens your mind and heart as well.
The illustrations were also created by the author. She finds a wonderful balance by focusing on the subjects and surrounding them with white space, which brings an even more complete emphasis on the images and what is taking place. The illustrations feel familiar in a nostalgic way, but offer a total newness to the narrative. This is the kind of book that will create a wave of change in anyone who reads it.
