Operation Cobalt: The Biogenesis War Files, by L. L. Richman, is a dynamic science fiction novel with a relatable, compelling plot. The story revolves around the main character, Katie, who is independent and fiercely loyal to friends and family, especially her Basset puppy, Fred. She works on a mining tug named the Goblin for Cobalt Mining, and it's life and work as usual on this workspace until a random spaceship narrowly misses her. It's obvious to Katie that the near-collision was intentional, and now this hostile vessel, Secede Sirius, is headed toward her home base, Sierra Twelve, a mining platform where her family and friends are. When those she cares about are held captive by those on the malevolent craft, Katie takes matters into her own hands to rescue them. As you will find out, Katie is a force to be reckoned with.

Richman has written a science fiction novel with both suspense and drama, and it's a book that you can sink your teeth into. It's everything you want in sci-fi, from tech to space to conflict but this one is a standout because it's grounded in the personal drama of the main character Katie. The author has created a good balance of sci-fi, plot, and character development. Although you will find exquisite attention to detail in the tech/space areas, and all the exciting conflict you would expect in a space drama, you will also find magnetic, endearing qualities in the characters and situations that Richman presents. It all comes back to Katie, and she's fresh out of the gate as a young adult of eighteen, but is she emotionally and mentally equipped to handle the battle she jumps into? One of my favorite aspects of this story is the bond she has with her puppy, Fred. It's really cute, and it reveals Katie's personality. If you enjoy character-driven sci-fi novellas with plenty of tech and lots of verve, you will become an instant fan of Operation Cobalt: The Biogenesis War Files, by L. L. Richman.
