Oscar and Emmy have just been adopted. The kittens are spending their first Christmas in their fur-ever home with their fur-ever family. It’s a time full of excitement and lots of new things to explore. The Christmas tree, with all its sparkling ornaments, attracts the kittens’ attention. While the family - twins Abby and Charlie, along with their parents - enjoy supper, the kittens climb the tree to the top. But, once up high, they’re suddenly terrified. Their shaking sends the tree crashing to the ground. They may have scared themselves (and the family) in this adventure, but they certainly haven’t lost their curiosity. There’s so much more exploring to do. And, Santa’s coming.

Terri Sabol’s picture book story, Oscar and Emmy’s First Christmas, shares some of the funny and somewhat naughty things kittens do, especially at Christmas time. Although they managed to topple the tree and make a mess of things, instead of being angry, the kittens’ fur-ever family is very loving and forgiving. In fact, when the tree falls over, the family is more concerned about the kittens than the tree! The family shares their Christmas traditions with the new members of the family: there’s the neighbor who visits with a special gift for the kittens, the tree decorating, wrapping presents, carolers and so much more. And the best part is the kittens are included in all the excitement. After all, they are a part of the family. Having adopted a few pets, I know how important it is to care for our little fur-babies and allow them to be a part of the family, not an afterthought, tucked away in some corner while the family does their thing. This is a charming story to teach young readers pet owner responsibility and the importance of caring for pets. Beautifully illustrated and beautifully told.
