Otherwise Engaged by Joanna Barker is the story of Rebecca Rowley who is engaged to Edward and best friends with Lieutenant Nicholas Avery. Rebecca meets Edward while away visiting her friend and they quickly become engaged. However, Edward's and Rebecca’s families have an unfavorable past and a marriage will be frowned upon on both sides. One of Rebecca’s passions is riding her horse, Stella, and when she is out for a ride, she must jump into a lake to save a drowning young girl. Enter Nicholas, the brother, coming to find his little sister and quickly befriending Rebecca. As the days pass, Rebecca and Nicholas spend a lot of time together. Rebecca and Edward are trying to find the hidden family secrets and can only write letters and tell no one of their love. Edward’s surprise arrival at Rebecca’s home will make Rebecca’s future clear and she must make decisions using both her head and her heart.

Otherwise Engaged by Joanna Barker is a romantic historical story set in 1822. I found Otherwise Engaged to be all it said and more. In my mind, I tried to tell Rebecca what I hoped she would do and kept turning pages until I got answers. The differences between Edward and Nicholas were huge and well described. Joanna Barker has taken all of the elements needed to write a wonderfully romantic historical novel. I highly recommend reading Otherwise Engaged and promise you will not be disappointed – it is a sure winner.
