Oval Man by Mary Davis Gage is a story about an unusual superhero. Shapes abound in this wacky story. Oval Man lives on planet Ovaliscious with his wife Ovalah and his dog Ovaltina. One day his nemesis Triangularus, who lives on the planet Isosceles, decides he wants to eat something tastier than the triangle food on his planet. He travels through the solar system until he gets to planet earth. He smells the most delicious food at a school cafeteria, and it is shaped like a triangle – pizza! He becomes invisible and starts stealing kids’ lunches. It is time for Oval Man to save the day with the help of his trusty little dog. They grab Triangularus before he can steal any more pizza and send him on his way. But will that stop him from trying to get more cheese pizza?

Mary Davis Gage has written a story that subtly includes information on shapes and the solar system. Kids love superheroes and Oval Man and his dog Ovaltina are fun ones. Anya Louise Davis, the illustrator, has even included a guide to drawing Oval Man in the back. Of course, every superhero needs a villain and pizza-loving Triangularus is a worthy opponent. I think it is great that the setting for Oval Man takes place in a school cafeteria. Kids will love imagining that there could be invisible superheroes and villains in their own school. Because the characters are based on shapes, they might also be inspired to draw their own superhero saga.
