Pacific Viking: An Epic Historical Fiction by Barnaby Allen is an epic tale that is well researched. Set two hundred years ago, this is the story of a historical personage, a Viking named Charles Savage, a man who had to rise above powerlessness to claim his place in the world of men, but who suffered great humiliation in spite of everything. Follow this phenomenal character in his adventures through different countries —Sweden, Australia, and the South Pacific Islands.

The descriptive power of the prose greets the reader right from the very beginning of the narrative. The words are carefully chosen, the diction is apt and the author fills the writing with wonderful details without sacrificing the main plot points. Listen to how it begins: “Na Vokai watches and waits; and waits, all that afternoon drenched, unblinking but shivering, as storms of warm rain send glassy bullets, furious, off the Pacific reefs, exploding above him, and below, where finding their mark, form ruddy in the sodden carnage that now fills his gaze.” While the story is filled with action, the author ensures that huge doses of emotional and psychological depth are put into the narrative. Pacific Viking will appeal to fans of historical novels as well as readers looking for the kind of adventure that befits a Viking.

Barnaby Allen is a promising storyteller and his first novel makes the reader want to read more of this author’s work. The characters are strong, the setting offering beautiful and vivid images to fill the minds of readers, and the plot well designed to keep the reader turning from page to page. Pacific Viking: An Epic Historical Fiction is tightly plotted and deftly written, a work that entertains and informs.
