Author Biography

I was a sixties child, so missed out on 'the revolution'. Yet I seemed to spend a good few years in India etc., chasing a fading dream.
I recently spent time in Sri Lanka researching my wife's family and became interested in its history. I read a lot of books from the early days of the British Empire in Ceylon. This coalesced with many other interests; elephants, Buddhism, Krishnamurti, history, science, mythologies, the natural world.
I felt inspired to write something which expressed my own emotional roller-coaster, my own take on this world, and Padma was born.

Padma and the Elephant Sutra by W.L. Snowden is a journey through history as elephants search for a better future, in an adventure filled with myth, history, and hope. When Padma is discovered in the water, the elephants find her strange as she has no stories of her name, and what she does recall are pieces of an ancient past. When Padma meets a human named George with a dark past, she opens up his eyes to a world he never imagined, the world of elephants. Together, they're determined to fulfill an ancient covenant, but obstacles in their past may prove more than they bargained for.

W.L. Snowden's writing is honest, so connected to the characters that the pain and hope the elephants go through is truly felt. The mythology throughout is perfectly fitted to the world, most of which is seen through the eyes of elephants. The connection between Padma and George is sincere, as Padma opens up his eyes to another reality, which includes the cruelty inflicted upon the elephants. There are moments of heartbreak as human nature is constantly shown regarding the elephants as something to be hunted or used. Though, it's often told of how this is due to humans not knowing or understanding.

The elephants are full of life and wisdom with a beautiful outlook on life. They're entirely personified, but the emotions and personalities don't stray from what you'd think of as an elephant's thoughts. One of the characters that stands out the most is Abu, a sweet and innocent young elephant that has the view point of a child and never fails to make me smile. Elegant and beautiful, with lovely descriptions, and vast in history, Padma and the Elephant Sutra is a unique read that's hard to put down. Definitely a must-read!

Wonderful Read.
Padma and the Elephant Sutra.
A seamless meld of Origin myths, Science Fiction, Hermeneutics, Biology and History of Ceylon, Europe and the Near East; elucidated by the authors' extensive experience of the Indian sub-continent.
He is something of a wordsmith, which as a lover of philology, I admire.
A fascinating and enlightening read, in addition, almost a textbook guide of perhaps how one should live and respect the planet.

It is oft said that we all have one book in us, if so this is a very fine example.
I hope this is not true and Mr. Snowden will continue to amuse, educate and enlighten us.

A lovely read!
This is a lovely read, and truly does the job a good book should – to transport you to another world. Well, it isn’t actually another world, it’s Ceylon, what is now Sri Lanka. But the history and mythology infused in the story made it feel like another, special world. The landscape is described beautifully, and having visited Sri Lanka myself, the author’s descriptions accurately conjure some of the differing landscapes I remember, though he has a reverence for the surroundings I didn’t have at the time, which makes me want to visit again! What I enjoyed most were the descriptions of the elephants and their behaviour toward one another. These read like the work of someone who has really studied elephant behaviour, and I felt like I had been granted access to watch the most intimate aspects of their socialising, and gain a deeper level of insight into elephants’ lives. But this story isn't just about the elephants, and the plot weaves in directions I never expected. This was a story unlike anything else I’ve read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope there is more to come.

Brilliant book written by a budding author who deserves more recognition

A wonderful and beautifully written story which kept me wanting to know the outcome. WL Snowden has the gift of being able to create characters who you care about, both elephantine and human. It is fascinating to follow the lives of the elephants with their rituals, ways of communication, myths and legends, as they follow their ancient pathways in a changing world and realise that their ancient, almost forgotten lore has equipped them to be a key part of a huge transformation. I loved the vibrant descriptions of the countryside and the way that the author was able to draw on his extensive knowledge of the history and geography of Sri Lanka, the ways of the elephants, and a deep understanding of spiritual transformation and weave it all into a gripping and fascinating tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
