Pari-Mutuel Blues is the action-packed sequel to Dale and Rosanna Mouser's Payne's Song. After a brief setback, Payne McCarty and his country music superstar of a wife, Rusti King, settle into a happily married life on their sprawling ranch in Texas. Meanwhile, Payne's best friend Skeeter is helping him run Starlight Stables, breeding racehorses with whom, one day, he is determined to win the Kentucky Derby. However, trouble arises in the form of his old nemesis, Red Phillips, who has recently been released from prison and is hell-bent on revenge. After Skeeter's hiring of a private investigator results in the death of an innocent woman, Red's threat looms larger. After an eventful stay in Rio de Janeiro, Red is back with a vengeance and targets Skeeter and Payne's family. Will the best friends be able to protect their loved ones?

Pari-Mutuel Blues is a fantastic nail-biter of a novel that continues Payne and Skeeter's story and introduces the next generation with style. Fast-paced and full of twists and turns, there isn't a single dull moment in the entire book. Authors Dale and Rosanna Mouser bring a few fresh faces into the story who are as compelling as the old guard. Skeeter is as ornery as ever, and I loved how his twin daughters turned out to be as troublesome as their father. This installment feels like Skeeter's story, with Payne and the others in supporting roles. The latter half is jam-packed with suspense and action and will have readers on the edge of their seats. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed both the books in this series so far, and I hope to read further sequels in the future.
