Pastoring through a Pandemic: Battling the Second Wave of COVID 19 by Reginald Bernard is a look at the author’s pastoral journal entries. It highlights the sixty-five-day period in the collective life of the King Solomon Baptist Church that began in the summer of 2020. As their church saw the pandemic as an attack on their God-ordained right to worship in person, they took on the challenge by discerning that this battle is spiritual in nature. Turning to the Scripture for guidance, they found the Four Pillars of Wisdom as a potent tool to face the challenge. As their deacon himself struggles with the coronavirus, the church demonstrates an even stronger resolve by facing the enemy up close. Witnessing its share of death among its members, the King Solomon Baptist Church has established a COVID advisory committee that sets in motion best practices to help them continue to gather and worship God.

It is notable that Bernard is open and honest in sharing how their congregation developed awareness in battling the pandemic through a spiritual perspective. Equally notable is their response to collective worship and social distancing. It is true that faith can move mountains and even truer if faith is pushed by a pressing reality. In organizing a COVID advisory committee, the King Solomon Baptist Church disseminates practical health information and precautionary measures against a global pandemic that degrades the way they traditionally practice worship. Bernard’s writing is raw and unadulterated the way a journal or diary entry should be. Pastoring through a Pandemic serves as a good model to how religious organizations can take steps in battling the pandemic while nurturing their spiritual needs.
