Several days later, Lady Vesta joins them, but Lord Charles, too ill to travel, remains behind. The two guests are a thorn in Mariana's side. In addition to Lady Vesta and Sir John's uncomfortable presence, her father's protege who arrived with Lady Vesta is wreaking havoc on Mariana's senses. While avoiding her exasperating guests, Mariana goes riding and happens upon a grisly murder scene.
