Petunia is a special little girl. The only thing is, she's very different. You see, Petunia is a unicorn. That sets her apart from all the humans that live around her and her aunt, Auntie Sprinkles. Even the butler, Winston, is human. When Petunia and her aunt move to New York City, she's enrolled in a special private school. Petunia is worried about being teased for being different. But Auntie Sprinkles, ever positive, declares: "Remember, everyone is different in their own way. Just be your unique self, and trust me, they'll be fighting over you." In other words, Petunia is encouraged to embrace her uniqueness. And, when she finds out she has to play a Christmas tree in the Christmas pageant, which is only a few days away, she's worried, especially when the tree lights won't go on when she presses the remote. Once again, Auntie Sprinkles has profound advice for Petunia: "When things in life don't go your way, never, ever, let it dim your sparkle. If you embrace who you are, you will always know exactly what to do."

R.L. Ullman's picture book story, Petunia the Unicorn's Dazzling Christmas Debut: A Petunia Cupcake Fluffybottom Book, is an entertaining story that teaches young readers about acceptance, self-worth, and equity. The plot follows Petunia and her aunt as they move to the big city of New York just before Christmas, and Petunia's first days in a new private school. Being new to the city, Petunia, ever self-conscious of her 'different' appearance, hopes her aunt won't go overboard in decorating and celebrating, as Petunia doesn't want to draw attention to herself. Her aunt, of course, has different ideas. But, as the young unicorn discovers, her aunt is also a fountain of sage advice. Petunia learns that being different is more than just okay; it's what makes her, and everyone else, profoundly unique. By embracing one's differences, one can shine beautifully for all the world to see. Beautiful illustrations accompany this charming story.

Petunia the Unicorn’s Dazzling Christmas Debut is a Petunia Cupcake Fluffybottom Book, written by R.L. Ullman and illustrated by Yusup Mediyan. Children are sure to enjoy it. Having just moved to Manhattan with her aunt, their dog, and their loyal human butler, Petunia is nervous about being the only unicorn in her class. She wants to fit in, but her aunt is quick to teach her a lesson about how fabulous it is to be different. When the class performs a Christmas play, Petunia is given a role in the grand finale. Nothing seems to go right during rehearsals, and Petunia is worried about the big night. Petunia must find a way to use her unique unicorn talents to save the play.

With Yusup Mediyan’s brightly colored, dazzling illustrations that pop off the page, R.L. Ullman’s story of Petunia Cupcake Fluffybottom is brought to life in a fun and beautiful way. Fans of the mystical unicorn will love imagining Petunia as their new friend and classmate, and parents will also love the subtle social lessons that Petunia and her aunt teach us. The story is fast-paced, and early readers will certainly love following along with the easy-to-read text. Pre-readers will not be left out either, as the detailed illustrations, which are easily my favorite aspect of Petunia’s story, provide more than enough context for preschoolers to follow along and create their own story. I look forward to reading and sharing more of Petunia’s adventures in other books in the series.
