“Why is pirating so addictive? They say that when you lose your first hand, you get hooked.” Adventures, even as pirates, can be both fun and funny, not to mention being full of poetic nonsense. In Jan Jang’s Pirate Poetry, the fun is in the verse, as well as the Comic Reliefs that share punny pirate jokes. Gather together a quirky, odd-ball crew and you have the makings of an extraordinarily poetic adventure on the high seas. Pirates are daring, brave, industrious (when they feel like it), and raring to go everywhere and anywhere. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a few poetic thoughts along the way and join the crew! You won’t be disappointed.

Jan Jang’s children’s book, Pirate Poetry: A Playful Adventure, is a great way to introduce young readers to different forms of poetry and to have some fun by writing some lyrical lines of their own. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and the instructional part of the book is through lyrically funny examples, with a few explanations in the footnotes to describe certain types of poetry. The inserted Comic Relief pages will have young readers chuckling along and sharing some of their puns. And the poems themselves are full of punny thoughts, like the “My Crew Haiku” which defines each member of the pirate crew in crafty haiku poetry. At the end of the book, there are a few interactive activities to inspire the young mind, like an ”un-treasure hunt” and “Find Your Pirate Name.” This book will certainly inspire the young poet to find their muse.
