Planet G by Jerry Underhill is an engaging science fiction tale about a group of pioneer colonists on a planet, called Planet G, which is teeming with strange lifeforms. The story follows a man named Huston who makes the first contact with some peaceful alien lifeforms. Another group of aliens is later discovered that appear to be less peaceful. Huston and the other humans - who have been sent to the planet to determine if it is suitable for humans to live there - aren’t sure what to make of the various lifeforms. Their inability to communicate with most of the aliens that they’ve come in contact with eventually leads to trouble. Soon, the investigative team finds themselves caught in the middle of a conflict between alien species.
Planet G is a very thoughtful book that causes its reader to ponder what it would truly be like for mankind to visit another planet that has a different ecosystem. A planet with similar trees and rivers and mountains like Earth but none of the same lifeforms. On that level, Planet G succeeds in bringing its readers into a very realistic situation. The main cast of characters is easy to relate to and quite likable for the most part. The story that we’re given by Jerry Underhill is well-written, using language that is almost poetic in its descriptions and narrative. Overall, Planet G is an entertaining and thought-provoking science fiction story. It’s also the beginning of a series of books about the colonists' experiences on the strange but fascinating world of Planet G.
