Plus One at an Amish Wedding by Miralee Ferrell is a story of love’s complications. A New York City doctor, April, and her new boyfriend, Jesse, a veterinarian, are off to meet his family. The problem is, if one could describe it as a problem, Jesse’s family lives in Amish country, and Jesse is/was Amish. He left his community to follow his dream of caring for animals. Leaving before being baptized, he wasn’t shunned and maintained his family and community connection. Now his brother is getting married and he wants Jesse there. Jesse wants April to join him. Not too complicated, except a young widow is looking for a new husband and she has her sights set on her old boyfriend, Jesse. Love can’t get any more complicated than that, can it?

Miralee Ferrell’s Plus One at an Amish Wedding is about a love triangle filled with sweet romance and set in Amish country. The plot follows April and Jesse’s budding romance and April’s introduction to Jesse’s Amish past. There is plenty of conflict as April adjusts to the very tight-knit lifestyle of the Amish and frequently feels left out, the third wheel, the plus one person on the sidelines. The descriptive narrative is well constructed, and readers instantly feel part of the story. The characters are well-developed and the dialogue is efficient and effective. Ferrell is well-versed in everything Amish and shares her knowledge with ease. Readers who enjoy Amish stories with conflict and romance will certainly enjoy Plus One at an Amish Wedding. This is a very enjoyable and engaging read.
