Finally, a great children’s picture book that teaches children how becoming a parent to a pet is much more involved than just loving the animal. In Porter and Midge: Paws and Responsibilities, Jennie Chen and Giselle Nevada share the many responsibilities of having a pet. This delightful book tells the story of Lora and CJ, who want a dog. Their parents wisely tell them to learn how much work being a good doggie parent is, and then they will consider buying them a pet. Too often, parents have their children promise to take care of the pet without the child knowing how much is involved in this task. Following the example of Lora and CJ, children will learn how to research and provide care for their pets. This is the best children's book on owning a dog I have ever read.

Jennie Chen and Giselle Nevada base Porter and Midge on a real-life experience they shared, having a young child who wanted a pet. They teach basic care for pets through rhymes and illustrations while keeping the responsibilities fun. At the end of the book, the authors share wisdom and guidance to parents that will help them assist their children in making wise decisions. The authors encourage parents to use this book to discuss pet ownership and responsibilities with their children. Jennie and Giselle remind parents that safety should always be the primary concern. This word of caution applies to the safety of both the child and the pet. Your child will love reading this book because the authors' writing style draws the child into the story. I highly recommend that every parent buy this book and discuss it before purchasing any pet for their child.
