There is much happening in Whitegrass, Texas in the year 1873 for Reverend Josh Hill, Sarah, his wife, and his friends and neighbors in the town. When Elijah Norton is found by his wife Rachel, murdered as he worked on the chores of his ranch, the problems begin. Francisco is the gentle Mexican who is seen leaning over Elijah, covered in his blood with the weapon at his feet. At this point, the battle lines are drawn and the war begins. Francisco is put in prison, though not everyone believes he is the killer. Reverend Josh tries to keep the peace and preaches God’s words in his Sunday sermon and when talking to the townspeople. Uriah Thorpe is the main problem and is determined to create a fight between the Mexicans and the Texans. His aim is to keep Texas for the Texans and send all of the Mexicans back to Mexico. He also wants to get his hands on the Norton ranch so that he can have the use of the Pecos for his cattle and the largest spread in Texas.

Preacher of the Pecos by C. E. Edmonson is a story of friendship, hate, love and God’s word. This is a dream story for the western genre reader. It is about the ways of the old west but so much more is included. I found the struggle that Josh had between taking the selfish route or doing what he knew would please God compelling. I was impressed with the strong friendship and caring that was present between Sarah, Rachel, and Carmelita. Cole Bradhurst and Carmelita are characters in the story that show good and evil in people. The bad guys, Uriah and his men, were impossible to like and the indecision of Cole made it seem very real. Preacher of the Pecos is a powerful story that C. E. Edmonson has brought vividly to life.
