Prophet's Journey (Prophet of the Badlands Book 1) by Matthew Cox is a science fiction story that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy a strong female protagonist. Althea has spent most of her young life being kidnapped by one group of raiders or another for her powerful healing gift, yet when she gains an adopted family at the age of eleven everything changes. No longer will Althea allow herself to be taken and used for her healing gifts; instead she has decided to stop being afraid of using her abilities to fight back against those that would take her from her new family. Will Althea manage to remain free or will the power of the corporations prove too much for her?

Prophet's Journey (Prophet of the Badlands Book 1) by Matthew Cox has a rather striking cover that grabbed my interest with the robot and the little girl (Althea) hiding behind some rubble; the cover immediately made me want to know the reason for her having to hide and for the dystopian appearance of the environment. I really liked Althea and I loved how the author kept her realistic with how she had to use a learning program meant for younger kids to teach her proper speaking and reading skills. It made her feel like a real little girl with the type of problems a child in her situation would have. I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen to Althea. Overall, I really loved this book and I cannot wait for the second book in the series!
