Perfect Magic by Samantha Coville is a story of magic and cats. Harper Bishop is not an unknown name in the world of witches and wizards and her place at the prestigious Jourdemayne Academy of Witchcraft was pretty much guaranteed the day she was born. The problem is, she doesn’t really want to be there because, to put it bluntly, magic is boring. She wants to get out and live her life but she doesn’t have a choice. She doesn’t make friends easily but finds it incredibly simple to make enemies, including Savannah and her roommate, Olivia. Floating through the classes, skipping where she can, Harper is on a countdown until two things happen. First, she meets a wizard from the neighboring Bolingbroke Academy for Wizards and Warlocks and, second, three kittens start to telepathically communicate with her. When she discovers what the kittens are and why they are there, Harper has more on her mind than just getting through school. Something evil is coming and it's down to Harper and the kittens, with the help of Ezra the wizard, to save the school. Will her magic be strong enough? Will Savannah prove to be a surprising ally? And what is Olivia’s role?

Purrfect Magic by Samantha Coville was a short but intriguing read. At first, it felt a bit simplistic to start but it soon kicked off and, apart from the odd swearword, it put me in mind of a miniature version of Harry Potter. The book is well-written, it moves at a decent pace and there isn't any hanging around. You will fall for the kittens, even when you discover what they really are and, I suspect, many of us will look at fluffy kittens slightly differently from now on! The characters were nicely developed and fitted the story very well. They are relatable, likable characters and the storyline keeps you reading. It is descriptive and includes a bit of romance just to sweeten things up a little. I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to book two.
