Quincy Freckle Paws is a basset hound dog who loves to sing. He sings everywhere he goes. He sings to the butterflies, the flowers, the raccoons, the black birds, the blue jays, the woodpecker. In fact, he sings to everyone he encounters on his daily jaunt through the forest. He has a special song that he sings, a song that expresses his joy for life. The time he stops singing is when he comes close to a black bear. Quincy Freckle Paws knows better. If you see a black bear, you quietly back away. That may stop the dog’s singing for one day, but tomorrow will come and with it another song for Quincy Freckle Paws.

Gloria Hartmann’s picture book story, Quincy Freckle Paws Sings in the Forest, will charm readers both young and old. Told in rhyming verse, very suitable for a story about singing, and accompanied by colorful illustrations, this book leads young readers through a forest of animals and insects of all shapes and sizes. Interspersed throughout the story of Quincy Freckle Paws’ daily jaunt in the forest is the song that the basset hound likes to sing, a song full of his love for life and everything in it. The rhyming charm of this song will have young readers singing along, creating their own melody to go with the words. I loved this book. After all, who couldn’t love a dog who sings? I have one of those (different breed of dog, but still a singer).
