Quotes from the Vault: The Wisest, Inspirational and Motivational Sayings From The Greatest Minds On Earth is a collection of quotes compiled by Hammad Farooqui, who offers these as “rare quotes taken from classic books and poems” and a valuable resource for all ages of readers. The quotes are organized alphabetically into more than one hundred and sixty topics, which span many areas of human thought and discourse. The quotes are attributed to people as varied as military and political leaders, business leaders, scientists, writers, artists, and entertainers; philosophers and religious figures and texts; literary classics, and anonymous sources.

I enjoy a good collection of quotes, especially if it includes topics that come up in my professional and social interactions and inspires me to look up the biographies of people whose names I don’t recognize. Except for the inclusion of some “typos” and missing or duplicated words, Quotes from the Vault fitted the bill for me. I was familiar with many of the quotes and many of the sources, but there was certainly a large number which I hadn’t come across before. A couple of my favorites from these newfound gems include “Character is a diamond that scratches every other stone” (Cyrus Augustus Bartol) and “Force, violence, pressure, or compulsion with a view to conformity, are both uncivilized and undemocratic” (Mahatma Gandhi). I don’t always agree with every quote I read, but every quote can stimulate thought and discussion. As Farooqui says (paraphrased), a few simple words can change your life with their power to motivate and inspire.
