What would you do if everyone you knew and everything you had was wiped out in a single moment, and you were left alone, stranded, and fighting for your life? Red on White by J.P. Biddlecome is the story of James, a fifteen-year-old boy who witnesses a catastrophic earthquake called the Big One that escalates into a tsunami. James finds himself floating in the sea with no hope of seeing his loved ones again. His dark thoughts and cryptic dreams keep him company until he stumbles upon one of his neighbor’s cats. Unfortunately, this union does not last, and he loses hope of seeing another human. Lonely, devastated, and hungry, James wishes for the end, but fate may have other plans for him.

Red on White took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I felt James’ pain and hopelessness throughout the book. The uncertainty of not knowing whether his family was alive was thought-provoking and made me relate to his plight. I enjoyed reading this book because it was intriguing and had a smooth, consistent flow. The story did not lag, and I finished it in one sitting. J.P. Biddlecome did a great job of explaining the thought process of a person whose life has turned upside down. Each character was transformed by the disaster and was desperate to hold on to anything that made them feel alive. This is a must-read for anyone who needs motivation to keep fighting for their life and what they want. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to read about surviving against all odds and getting a second chance at life. A brilliant story.
