In Rewrite the Stars by Christina Consolino, Sadie and Theo are on the verge of divorce. They are separated but have continued to live in the same house for the sake of the kids and due to Theo’s PTSD. Even though Theo initiated the divorce, he has put off signing the divorce papers, leaving their marriage up in the air. Things get even more complicated when Sadie has a random chance encounter with a man at a grocery store. It seems innocent enough, but Sadie can’t stop thinking about this man, and when she meets him again months later, she is forced to sort through her feelings for not only her husband but also this new man. The problem is, it isn’t always easy to know what you want and what is best for you and your family.

First and foremost, the author handled the issue of PTSD very well. This is a very real disorder and should not be discussed lightly, which I have seen done in the past. Christina Consolino has clearly done her research, which was evident in Theo’s story. At times heartbreaking and difficult to read, it was very real. That is the one word I have walked away with after reading this book: real. I never once questioned the validity of this story and the decisions these characters made. Just from the description of the book, we know Sadie meets someone else while her husband is going through a grueling experience, and it is very easy to judge her. However, I was just reminded that these characters can easily represent real people. They’re human. Who are we to judge someone’s actions and decisions as an outsider? Rewrite the Stars has heart, emotions, and very real issues. With flawed and relatable characters and an emotional story of how PTSD can affect not only the person who is suffering but also everyone around that person, this is one book you won’t want to miss.
