Rocco To the Rescue is a children's book by Caren Cantrell about robots playing soccer. The story starts at the beginning of the Robot Soccer Championship. Rocco loves playing soccer, but something is wrong with his code. He may not be able to play in the big game, but he still rushes to the aid of the other players, oiling their joints and assessing their injuries. Tycho, one of the best players on the team, bends a rod, and Rocco is thrown back onto the field. His bug has not been removed, though, so he causes his team to lose a valuable point. He knows what he must do, and he decides to put his team first.

Caren Cantrell has written a fantastic book with vivid illustrations about good sportsmanship and friendship on the field. The book will open up discussions about playing for a team over individual fulfillment and the role of artificial intelligence in sports. The author provides interesting facts at the end of her story about the Robot Soccer World Cup and its present and future significance. I read the book to my children, ages three to ten, and my younger children loved Rocco's story while my older children were amazed by the history of robots in soccer. The story raises awareness of the event, and my children want to research it. Rocco to the Rescue is a great story for younger children who are learning the rules of gameplay, but older children may appreciate the facts about artificial intelligence in sports.
