Rollstar by Scott Beynon is a young adult science fiction tale with a strong-headed protagonist who knows her only chance of survival rests on herself. Sahaar's grandmother is the queen of their little kingdom that relies on the rollstars to give them light. However, when her grandmother's rule is overthrown, Sahaar has no option but to run away. Her only companion is the pet fox she lovingly named Foxglove and her only source of a guide comes from a mysterious message she receives so she follows it to the "t." While running, she meets the strange Izumi, a girl who was asleep for years but now she is awake for some strange reason. Both the girls are on the run from the bounty hunters that want them for different reasons. But there is a bigger mystery surrounding their world and they need to figure it out before it is too late or else their world is forever plunged into darkness. Will they get the chance to do so?

Rollstar is a fast-paced young adult novel that readers of all ages will love. I enjoyed Sahaar's very intelligent mind. She is pragmatic, a little indecisive, but she is very easy to like. The pace of the story follows her growth. Her development drives the story forward and allows the reader an insight into her mind and life. Sahaar's relationship with Foxglove is tender, and her relationship with Izumi is simple. There is a little mistrust in the beginning, but there is also a sense of companionship. They rely on each other to see an end to this mess, and that made the story fun for me. The actual mystery behind the rollstars, what they do for the people, and why they are important for the survival of everyone is fascinating. This short yet wonderful story is a must-read!
