Rose by Mike Bryant is a dazzling thriller with a supernatural element and a good pinch of dark humor. Katya and Vijay, a loving couple, lived a conventional life in Port Langston. When Katya was wounded by a gunman, she lost her unborn child and survived only thanks to a heart transplant. While she experienced a hard time in an attempt to get back to normal, the dark secrets of Port Langston started coming to the surface. An undead girl straight from the grave finds Katya to tell her that Katya received her heart during the transplant. First terrified, Katya soon realizes that the girl is not dangerous, at least not to her. Nevertheless, she had returned with a vengeance, for there were those who wronged her.

Rose is a fast-paced and captivating read. I liked that the events unfolded quickly, leading us to an unexpected and breathtaking ending. Mike Bryant doesn't leave any loose ends but keeps the identity of the undead girl veiled, adding exciting intrigue to the plot. Bryant invites us to look at the theme of the undead from a fresh and unusual perspective. The book is not only an entertaining read but it raises the significant topic of corruption. The characters are fully developed, including the secondary ones, be it an over-annoying Pamela Harrington or Vijay's brilliant yet rebellious younger brother, Amar. This book is both wonderfully spooky and heartwarming at the same time. It's a perfect read for the Halloween season. Fans of dark fantasy or crime drama thrillers with a touch of the paranormal would enjoy this book. I would love to see a movie based on this marvelous story.
