Tired of reading how-to-write manuals? Meet Ruby and Kurt, two wannabes and almost good enough writers in a writing group who connect and share ideas, mostly about writing. In a clever, comic romp, these two, a 70-plus-year-old white male and a 40-ish black female (ex-military), make a splash in the how-to formula of the writing process. Ruby has met her idol as she extols the virtues and values of the one work she’s read by Kurt – a short story based on the Civil War. She engages Kurt to tutor her and, while they discuss the writing process, a relationship evolves.

Jon Michael Miller’s Ruby Tuesday and Other Stories is a writing handbook like no other. Following a chance meeting at a writing club, Ruby hooks up with Kurt to learn the ins and outs of the writing world. The plot follows the two on a comical romp (with some tragedy), from Key West to Jamaica and New York City. What begins as Ruby’s desire to find her writer’s voice turns into an emotional rollercoaster as the two find more than just a bond in the written word. In many ways, this book is another how-to manual on writing fiction, but it’s also a story in itself, complete with a plot, characters, settings, conflict, and even a little bit of romance. The book includes three short stories and a poem to complete the cycle of writing styles. Overall, this is an interesting read and, while enjoying the story, writers will also come away with some good tips on writing fiction.
