About 25 years after being the butt of the joke in a humiliating high school prank, Tristan struggles with being happy or feeling positive about his mundane life. When he receives an invite to his high school reunion, he panics about not having enough to show for the past 25 years. After receiving unwarranted yet profound advice from a coworker, he devises a plan to appear highly successful and important at the reunion. Tristan will finally experience what it means to be prom king and get a chance at reuniting with his ex, Breanna Davies. Unfortunately, things take a wild, unexpected turn when he's suspected to be a ruthless criminal and caught in a dangerous, high-speed chase. Santa Ana by Addison J. Chapple and Rachael Flanery is a deeply immersing, humorous tale about a man's nightmarish high school reunion party and his search for acceptance and love.

I loved that Santa Ana has a different feel to it. A narrator offers interesting opinions about the events, and several paragraphs are often dedicated to the characters' funny, chaotic inner thoughts. One moment, Tristan is expressing that he doesn't know how bathroom sex works, and the next he's stating how he's going out on top figuratively but is actually on the bottom. Addison J. Chapple and Rachael Flanery are masterful storytellers. Though the story is rife with humor and chaos, it also brings the reader's attention to a profound societal issue: how harmful expectations drive people to wear masks and make unhealthy choices in our extremely materialistic world. Ultimately, Santa Ana is a must-read for fans of dark, hilarious tales and readers who seek a story with a fresh, unique feel. It leaves you hungry for more of its sensational literary servings!
