Author and illustrator Bethany Stahl provides children with a call to action in her newest book, Save the Sky (Save the Earth Book 8). This book features an ethnically diverse cast of characters who venture to a coastal area where the skies are clear and the animals are given sanctuary. It’s one of the special places Liam and Grandpa visit where they can observe the natural world without creating a negative impact. Liam has invited his friends to join him and Grandpa. Children are introduced to environmental terminology in a way that will stick with them. The focus is on light pollution – an issue that does not receive as much attention as other environmental concerns. Readers will learn alongside Liam’s friends as the plot unfolds.

Bethany Stahl’s work is equally aimed at entertaining and teaching. Young readers will benefit from learning about how they can make changes in their households and communities that will impact the world. Indeed, people can take action that will have great positive effects on the animals and plants for generations. A special feature of the book is the inclusion of guided questions designed to reinforce understanding and check the reader’s comprehension. Save the Sky is perfect for reinforcing concepts in an elementary science class, but Stahl’s series isn’t just for the classroom. All readers can come away with new knowledge in this book.
