Isabel Scheck’s Shades of Blue is a heartbreakingly beautiful story about young love. Skylar and Ciel take the same school bus and share a science class. They have hardly spoken to each other, aside from the one occasion when Skylar asked him about their science homework. Ciel, a boy with cobalt-blue eyes, too shy to speak, steals chances staring at her. Skylar, a bold and beautiful girl with sparkling sapphire-blue eyes, has no idea how to approach this silent boy. The note Ciel slipped into her periwinkle bag puts a smile on her face, but she has no idea it was from him. Hop on the mini-roller coaster of Skylar and Ciel’s blossoming teen romance.

Shades of Blue by Isabel Scheck uses the color blue and its various shades act as a metaphor for all the events that transpire in this book, starting with Skylar’s favorite color and ending with Ciel’s gift to her. The story is well-paced and will have you cheering these two characters on. Shades of Blue took me on a mini emotional roller coaster. It’s told from a third-person point of view as though the reader is an observer of the events occurring in the story. I felt like a guardian angel watching over them as I read. Skylar means eternal life and strength, whereas Ciel means heavenly. We see how these meanings are represented in their story as well as the note Ciel left her. This teen coming-of-age and young-romance-themed book puts life into perspective and urges the reader to go out and do the things they’re afraid to do. It makes you remember that life is short, so we have to make it worth living!
