Shattered Lies by S.J. Francis is the story of Kate Thayer, a simple girl who runs her family’s horse farm. She is content with her life. She is a veterinarian and she loves her grandmother who raised her. However, when a series of lies come out and destroy her world, she has no idea if she can trust her grandmother again. Their relationship is tarnished and everything she believed about herself and her life was changed right from that instant.

Kate has no idea how she can change the past, but she is adamant to change her future. With the help of her grandmother and her grandmother’s once best friend, Kate will try to right the wrong and bring back that one part of her that was snatched from her when she was nothing but a baby. Now it is the quest of her grandmother to bring their relationship together and regain respect for one another.

Shattered Lies, the title implies a mystery novel or an action novel. When I first started to read this novel, I thought this would be a regular old-school mystery. Boy, was I surprised to find that the title implies so much more than the genre. The story is heartfelt and very real. I am very impressed with S.J. Francis. The way the author wrote the novel was super amazing and fascinating. She transported me back in time and made me feel the pain and confusion of a grandmother who thought she was doing the right thing. It is a great novel, one that I would like to read again and again.

I was hesitant in requesting a review from Readers Favorite at first, but I'm so glad I did. The best part is that I didn't pay for the review, yet it was fair and honest, just as I hoped it would be.
I hope you enjoy the review for Shattered Lies. I did. and if you read the book, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Cheers! S.J. Francis

Book Review for Shattered Lies by Annyce Placey for bn.com:
I bought this book after learning about the author on her blog tour for this book. In fact, I found myself following this author. I love this book! It may be labeled Women’s fiction, but it is so much more. I can attest to it because not only did I like it, but so did my husband and two teen age children, as did my mother. My son and daughter thought it was “so cool.” I don’t want to give anything away, but my children are bi-racial and I wanted them to read this book because of that. My husband is white. I’m not.
Kudos to the author for bringing such light onto a touchy subject nowadays. S.J. Francis handled the matter of race and bigotry with candor, yet with a patience and deep understanding not many people have. I speak from personal experience when it comes to race and bigotry. I hope that everyone reads this book, young and old, men and women, black, white, Hispanic, whatever. It is a highly charged novel of deep emotions. I couldn’t believe how quickly I read this book. Something happens on every page. You won’t be disappointed with this purchase. I wasn’t. My mother gave it an A+ (she is a retired high school teacher) for the depiction of the characters and setting. She grew up in Alabama in the sixties and was very impressed by this author, and my mother isn’t a women to impress easily.

“Francis writes a poignant and moving tale of bigotry, deceit, and the ultimate betrayal, where the people who you are supposed to be able to trust are the ones who tell the most devastating lies.”

“Shattered Lies is the story of the cruel, inhuman things man does to man and the tangled webs we weave trying to cover up our heinous behavior. It’s a heart-warming and heart-breaking tale of a young woman who discovers that everything she believed about herself, her parents, her very life, is nothing but a lie.” ~ Regan Murphy, Reviewer

5 Stars Excellent Book - The Pages Practically Turn Themselves! By Tonya on October 21, 2015
Format: Paperback
I read this book in two days which is pretty much a record for me. It started with a fast pace and ended even faster. The relationships in this story are remarkable and really made me think about prejudice in the South. It's hard for someone like me - too young for the era Katherine and Maddy grew up in and a Northerner - to even fathom the viewpoints of judging someone based on their skin color. I found this part of the story insightful and at the same time sad to know that people really felt this way. And perhaps some still do. I hope that anyone who reads this book will take a step back and think about the messages hidden on these pages. The only thing I didn't particularly care for is something that a lot of people may really like. It started a little too fast for me. I like to get to know the characters and their back story before things take off. So it's not a bad thing, it's just one of those things I happen to prefer. And all of the back stories are revealed throughout the book, just not in the beginning. Otherwise, be prepared for a lot of drama, twists, colorful (no pun intended) characters including very strong women, and a plot that teaches you about life and love. This is a fantastic read. Take a chance on it - you won't be sorry!

Review:
Full disclosure: When I first agreed to review this, I assumed it was a mystery or thriller form the book’s blurb. This was my assumption and was not the fault of the author. While it does not fit the genre profile for Kurt’s Frontier, it was such an enjoyable book, I could not leave it unreviewed.
Kate Thayer is an immediately likable protagonist whose whole world is turned upside down when she discovers her families' lies. She discovers she is actually half-black. Her father was white and her mother was black. Like Romeo and Juliette, it was a romance that neither side of the family approved of. They tried to break up the marriage. When Kate's mother became pregnant, they conspired to send the half breed child away when it is born and telling the woman that it was still born. The plan is carried out for Kate’s sister Astrid. It falls apart when Kate’s paternal grandmother, Katherine, sees and falls in love with Kate. The plan further goes awry when Kate’s mother bleeds to death resulting from the trauma of childbirth. Then her father kills himself, unable to live without the love of his life. The two families swear never to let Kate know the truth.
Kate discovers the truth as an adult when she finds her mother’s diary. Angry and disappointed by the people she thought she could trust, she decides she needs to find her twin. She forces the location of Astrid from her family’s doctor, and sets off to find her.
While not the action adventure tales I usually enjoy, Shattered Lies proves to be two sisters quest for the truth, and two families quest for redemption.

5 Stars A Must Read
By J. Carbone on November 19, 2015
Format: Paperback
S.J. Francis has created a racially charged story that has blown me away. With one secret piling on top of another, I was left guessing from beginning to end. It was refreshing to see Kate's strength and determination even while her world, or what she thought was her world, crumbled right before her eyes. A wonderful debut novel leaving me excited to see what this extremely talented author will come up with next.
