Skye Bothma’s novel Shooting Stars: Road Less Traveled features Catherine, an unappreciated receptionist. Catherine dreamed of being a writer, but she supported David’s career until he had an affair with his office receptionist. Catherine had tickets to Hawaii she needed to use before they expired. Her hotel accommodation failed to provide Catherine with any comfort. She went in search of breakfast but found herself drawn to the beach, where she was in ankle-deep water, lost in thought. Caught unawares, she was swept away by the water. Meanwhile, Jake Donovan, a famous actor, was taking pictures when he saw Catherine being washed out to sea. He got her to the beach and revived her. Apart from his kindness, Catherine was stunned. Jake planned on making her vacation more than she had ever imagined.

Skye Bothma wrote a slow-burn romance, capturing Catherine’s life as her work and past relationships prevented her from finding happiness. Jake’s generosity toward a stranger amazed me. I enjoyed the creativity used to introduce the characters in the story. The snobby lawyers Catherine worked for would have made me quit in less than a day. Jake’s fame failed to impress Catherine, and this was a major appealing factor throughout the entire book. I was impressed by the vivid descriptions of Catherine’s visits to tourist attractions. The witty dialogue between Jake and Catherine felt natural. I felt a true connection with Catherine’s inner turmoil and self-doubt. The range of emotions in Shooting Stars made the story engaging. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy romantic adventures.
