Shrugg, 1 Mile by G.A. Schindler was an interesting combination of Stephen King and The War of the Worlds, where time stands still and creepy characters lurk in strange corners. In Shrugg, Mark is befriended by Morgan Magoo, the top scientist of a group of aliens hiding in another dimension. Mark is drawn to Shrugg, a strange and weird land inhabited by unhappy aliens and disgruntled politicians who don't know what to do to keep themselves or the town's eclectic inhabitants happy.
The characters in this story were weird in a surprisingly pleasant way and added to the depth of this story. I kept expecting them to jump out of the pages and never quite trusted their motivation, not sure why they felt the need to lure Mark to Shrugg and what sinister and evil things were meant for him once he arrived. Even harmless activities had a sinister tone and I kept expecting someone to get axed or their head chopped off. It was like the creepy music of a scary movie that isn't really even that scary (nothing jumps out at you), but you just keep expecting it around every corner because of that darned repetitive music.
I also liked the introduction of clones in this story. Cloning is such a controversial topic and yet surprisingly not as futuristic as one might believe. The idea that it could be implemented is interesting, especially around aliens and dark creatures of the night. I thought that was an interesting twist that gave the story some credibility and dimension.
