Simon the Snake is a children's book written by Diane Blue Brooks Britt and illustrated by Alyssa Grizenko. Simon the Snake lives in the forest, surrounded by green grass and tall trees. Lonely, Simon calls out to meet new friends. He meets Rabbie Rabbit and Freddie Fox, but Freddie is grumpy and wants to be left alone. When Freddie sees Simon and Rabbie have so much fun, he decides he wants to play too. The trio then meets Bobbie Bobcat who insists on being in charge. When they play Hide and Seek, Simon easily wins by hiding in the grass. But when they next decide to play baseball, Simon feels sad as he has no hands to catch a ball and he feels quite useless. Unanimously, Simon is voted as the umpire, and they call themselves the Forest Friends Ball Team - a place where everyone belongs.

Diane Blue Brooks Britt has done a wonderful job of showing children how being different ought never be a disadvantage, and where there is a will, there is a way. Friendships are born from a lonely snake who wants to have others to play with. Regardless of the massive differences between the four new friends, each has their own strengths and merits which make them a wonderful individual all on their own. The beautiful illustrations of Alyssa Grizenko truly bring this magical tale to life and encourage young readers to be accepting of living things that are so different from themselves. My face lit up when I read how easily these four new friends compromised and found a way where all could enjoy playing. Simon the Snake would make an essential addition to any home library and I recommend it be read to children aged two to three years and over.
