Sins of Our Mothers is a dystopian thriller written by Nicole Souza. Fifteen hundred years into the future, a disastrous global calamity has led to the birth of Defects among half the human population, leading society to segregate defective children after the age of twelve into Settlements. When Defective Research Center President Lyratelle Faith finds her youngest sibling Willcom turned over to one such Settlement, she hatches a plan to infiltrate the colony by becoming its Chief Director. Spending time with the Defects makes her compassionate toward them, leading her to find like-minded women who care for their rights. But when President Law's loyal General Sarah Love learns about her true motives, she does everything in her power to stop the truth from coming out. Will Lyratelle be able to protect Willcom and her loved ones?

Sins of Our Mothers is an enthralling dystopian novel with a unique premise that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Author Nicole Souza's meta-commentary seems to have some real-world connotations, albeit the situations in the story are entirely different. The plotting is intricate, moving at a brisk pace with plenty of twists and turns. The characters are genuine and well-developed. I found myself compelled by Lyratelle, Sebastian, Willcom, and Heatherly. I also enjoyed the friendship and banter between the Defects within the Settlement. The narrative uses multiple POV characters to showcase the various factions involved in the story. If you enjoy dystopian thrillers with a unique world, I highly recommend Sins of Our Mothers.
