Linda Hoff celebrates and honors the journey of mothers with mentally ill adult children in her book, Sisters in the Storm: For Moms of Mentally Ill Adult Children (MIAC). The challenges of MIAC far outweigh those of mothers dealing with normal children, and it is thanks to books like this that parents of mentally ill adult children find common ground and are assured that they are not alone. This book is written for you to be able to withstand the challenges of this special type of parenting. Of course, this is not a book about how to fix your child. It’s a book that chronicles a mother’s journey toward self-discovery that will inspire you to take your own steps. Each chapter is designed to reclaim your life. It is the author’s hope that her own experience as a mother of a MIAC will serve as a form of support for you to find your own balance.

Mental illness among adults significantly impacts their lives and their families. Parents, especially mothers, often become caregivers for their adult children with mental illness and they become instrumental in the care and recovery of their adult children by providing housing, financial assistance, emotional support, case management, and advocacy, just as Linda Hoff has provided for her own son. Hoff writes with a deep sense of compassion and empathy. She wears the scars of her struggles as a badge of wisdom, and she tells her story without pulling any punches. In reading her story, she hopes that the steps you take will somehow ease your burdens and increase your awareness in dealing with your special adult child. Sisters in the Storm will urge you to get out of your comfort zone. It is the first step that you must take, along with the commitment you have to your child. Ideal reading for all parents, clinicians, and advocacy groups, this book truly echoes the Buddha’s sage advice that pain is certain; suffering is optional.
