Candace Robinson and Elle Beaumont introduce King Morozo and Eirah in Slaying the Frost King: Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers. Morozo has learned that the village of Vinti has not performed the required annual animal sacrifice. In anger, Morozo sends Vinti’s chieftain a message. The chieftain announces to the villagers that in one week, King Morozo will choose a maiden to sacrifice during a celebration. If they refuse, then the villagers will all die. Eirah and her friend Saren fear for Eirah’s safety. On the day of the celebration, Eirah and Saren attempt to blend in with the crowd by wearing plain clothing. Unfortunately, their plan is foiled when Morozo goes straight to them. Even more surprising to the girls, Morozo picks Eirah and takes her to the palace as a prisoner.

Candace Robinson and Elle Beaumont give the alternating perspectives of King Morozo and Eirah. I admired Eirah’s independent nature and how she wasn’t afraid of Morozo. The story was unpredictable and built suspense. Ulva’s excitement over Eirah’s ability to make music boxes fostered a genuine friendship. I laughed at Eirah’s irritation at nobody knocking on the bedroom door before barging into the room. The details of the woods and the castle were vivid. I could envision the crackling fire and the picturesque snowy forest. The supporting characters added depth that allowed me to understand the feelings of both Eirah and Morozo. It was easy to follow and the transitions between the characters were effortless. The story's unexpected conclusion allows for the possibility of a sequel. I recommend Slaying the Frost King to readers who appreciate fantasy stories about immortal beings ruling over mortals.
