In Slidell The Squirrel Goes To The Birds by Thomas Hanley, Slidell is a curious little squirrel living in a backyard with a bird feeder. Slidell loves the seeds in the feeder, but the birds that eat from it don’t seem to like him very much. He wanted to eat when the birds did and decided to try to make friends with them so they would be comfortable with him being so close to them. He gradually gets closer to the birds each time they flock to the feeder, but they become angry with him. Will Slidell ever get to make friends with the birds? Will they welcome him the way he wants them to do? What would a friendship between a bird and a squirrel look like?

Slidell The Squirrel Goes To The Birds is a beautiful story that will help kids understand how important it is to be accepting of those who are different from them. I enjoyed the way Slidell moved closer gradually so that the birds wouldn’t be afraid rather than forcing his way into their flock. This will teach kids that kindness is much better than a quick, aggressive approach. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and show Slidell and the birds in their natural habitat. This brings the story to life in a fun way. I recommend Slidell The Squirrel Goes To The Birds by Thomas Hanley to young readers who love stories about animals and how they co-exist in nature.
