Smidgen, the Baseball-Loving Pigeon, written by Sue Nichols and illustrated by Gary Blake, is the tale of Smidgen, a young pigeon born near the baseball stadium in New York City. Smidgen's family is forced to move when their nesting place is demolished, but they find a perfect new home in the stadium. As Smidgen grows up, he makes friends, overcomes his fear of flying at night, and becomes a referee to stop a fight between New York and Boston fans. Through his experiences, Smidgen learns the value of kindness and unity, highlighting the idea that, despite team rivalries, they are all pigeons who should get along. The story also introduces the anticipation of a new baby joining the family, the tradition of sharing a family song, the importance of family bonds, and communal values.

Smidgen, the Baseball-Loving Pigeon is overflowing with positive messaging and themes that are creatively wrapped up in a heartwarming children's book. The use of a baseball stadium as its backdrop makes it unique, especially with the excitement of Opening Day and the fans' enthusiasm. This sets a stage that promotes inclusivity by relating different pigeons from rival teams coming together, peacemaking, and the value of unity. While it may not have been the initial intent, this was particularly important as I read to my blended family. This extends to the love and care shown by Smidgen's parents, which resonated and reinforced the significance of family relationships. Sue Nichols' writing is lyrical and fun, and the illustrations are wonderfully rendered on a full-spread color palette, making this book a winner, no matter which team you support. Very highly recommended.
