When Dad brings home a rescued puppy, there’s a lot of excitement in the house. Not only is the puppy excited, but everyone in the family is, too. But there is a lot to do in caring for a puppy. He needs attention and training, feeding, bathing and walking, and so much more, not the least of which is love. Inviting a puppy into the family is like adopting another family member. Puppies are for keeps, not just for the good times.

Raven Howell’s picture book story, So You Want a Puppy?, is a great learning tool for would-be young puppy owners. The story is told in rhyming verse and its cute introduction to the new member of the family is both charming and informative. The story may be instructive but it’s also fun-loving, just like the puppy, because even though adopting a pet is a lot of work, it can also be a lot of fun for both the puppy and the new owner. The plot develops nicely, intertwining the fun things one can do with a new puppy as well as the essential routines one must follow. At the end of the new puppy’s story, there is an introduction to some of the different breeds of dogs as well as a section on some of the special services dogs are trained to do, like a police dog and a special needs dog. But whatever the dog is trained to do, whether it’s working as a police dog or a cherished family pet, the most important thing to remember is that “every dog needs tender care/ With tons of love and hugs.” A wonderful way to introduce dog ownership and responsibilities to young children.
