Author Biography

Squire With Fire – Disappearance of Luka is Joseph’s fourth children’s book and the third of the Squire With Fire book series; all earning award accolades. Joseph initially wrote Squire With Fire – A Happy Dragon Tale to fulfill a thirty-year-old promise to his daughter Mallory, who at that time was two years old and loved stories about dragons and knights. Life simply flew by, and that promise was never completed until after Mallory informed him that he would be a grandfather. He immediately wrote the first story but could not find an illustrator within his budget, forcing Joseph to teach himself how to use an electronic drawing board and to illustrate the book himself.

Yearning to see if other venues would be appealing, Joseph wrote Skinny Legs and Fat Cheeks, which is about a giraffe and a hippopotamus. As a side goal, he incorporated awareness regarding the near extinction of the giraffe by highlighting World Giraffe Day and the support for the African-based Giraffe Conservation Foundation. That adventure book also earned copious awards and excellent reviews.

Realizing the talents of others in the book industry, Joseph sought a team from Global Book Publishing that would provide the necessary publishing services and fantastic illustrators, which makes this book of the Squire With Fire series quite unique and even more appealing.

Joseph lives with Joyce, his inspiring wife of over 29 years and their Labrador Retriever, Carmella in Johnston, Iowa.

Squire With Fire: Disappearance of Luka is a story about a white dragon named Luka. Luka's color and the fact that he is unable to breathe fire make him different from all the other dragons around. Because of this, the other dragons like to bully Luka, which made him uncomfortable around anyone except the ones who love him. This all changes when his friend Squire Mackenzie finds him and unites Luka and his parents. Mackenzie then sees a fire in her village. Oh no, the Vikings are trying to burn down her village. They have to save the castle, so they try to put the village fires out. Discovering earlier that Luka has special powers, Mackenzie and Luka's parents take Luka to help save her village and castle. What do you think? Is Luka bold enough to use his powers to help his friend?

I love this sweet story about Luka and his beautiful white color. Author Joseph Cassis does an incredible job writing this book in a way that children will get excited about, and they can understand the story very well. What an excellent and clever way to teach children about bullying and ways to defend themselves. Luka having Mackenzie as a special friend is lots of help because she always makes him feel better about himself. Not only is this a great story, but the illustrations are also phenomenal, with beautiful landscaping and colorful dragons. Of course, I have to say Luka is my favorite. He is pure white and it's stunning. The pictures capture the story so well and bring it to life on the pages. I would love to see a copy of this book in all elementary classrooms and libraries, as well as any daycare and any other places children may be such as a doctor's or dentist's office. I urge you to check out this beautiful book.

Squire With Fire: Disappearance of Luka is a fantasy storybook from the imaginative Joseph Cassis. Meet Luka, a young white dragon who is being bullied by other dragons, and he fears that they will burn him for being white. Thankfully, he has a human friend. Squire Mackenzie often calms him down and discovers that Luka has a unique talent. The little white dragon may not have the ability to breathe fire, but he can make himself invisible whenever he thinks scary thoughts. The dreaded day came when Vikings attacked the kingdom, which proved costly when they burned the villages. It is just a matter of time before the enemies attack the castle. Squire Mackenzie and the knights need someone to infiltrate the Viking camp to discover their next move. This is the opportunity for Luka to shine. Unfortunately, he has doubts about his abilities.

I liked the way this inspiring tale plays out. Joseph Cassis knows how to keep his young readers engaged while giving ideas for discussion to adults. He imparts important life lessons like confidence, courage, and friendship, as well as the persistent social issues of bullying and discrimination. The best part is that he manages to skillfully blend these messages into his plot so that it does not make it preachy. The story is well illustrated in that Luka exudes a winsome cuteness that immediately wins your heart. The revelation of the author as a storyteller and part of the storyline at the end is a welcome surprise. Squire With Fire is an awesome storybook that kids and adults will enjoy reading and it makes for a great discussion.

When you are a dragon, everyone expects you to breathe fire. Unfortunately, this is the one ability that Luka lacks and his white color makes him a target for mean, bully dragons. Luka takes refuge in the dark forest to avoid the bullies until his human friend, Squire Mackenzie, discovers him. The duo realizes Luka might not be able to breathe fire, but he possesses a unique ability the other dragons will envy. When Mackenzie finds that the Vikings have set fire to her village, she believes Luka is the only one who can help them. Can Luka use his newfound power to thwart the Viking attack? Read Squire with Fire: Disappearance of Luka, the latest addition to the Squire with Fire series by Joseph Cassis.

A superbly illustrated children's book, Squire with Fire imparts many valuable lessons. Joseph Cassis demonstrates that our differences from the norm do not make us unworthy. Everyone is unique in their own way. Luka’s story shows us how we can all excel once we understand our true potential. I loved how Luka’s parents and Mackenzie always stayed by his side. Their unconditional love and support uplifted Luka and boosted his confidence. Cassis’ story helps us to recognize these invaluable support systems in our lives. At the same time, the book teaches us intriguing tidbits about camouflage, with famous examples from the animal world. The eye-catching illustrations captured the emotions of the characters quite astutely. The coloring pages the book provides were an exciting bonus. I heartily recommend this book.

Squire with Fire: Disappearance of Luka by Joseph Cassis is about a young dragon named Luka who disappears after hiding from the other dragons who always tease and bully him because he is different. Luka is white, an unusual color for a dragon. His mother and father are red and green. Luka also can't spit fire as all the other dragons can, so they tease Luka. While hiding in the forest from his bullies, Luka becomes so scared that they will find him that he becomes invisible. His good friend and squire Mackenzie finds him and realizes that Luka becomes invisible when he is scared. After reuniting Luka with his parents, Mackenzie discovers that their village is under attack. Luka's newfound power becomes instrumental in finding out the enemy's game plan and rescuing their village from further attacks.

Squire with Fire: Disappearance of Luka by Joseph Cassis is a delightful story about a cute little dragon who deals with his bullies using one of his attributes that makes him different – being a white dragon. Luka may not be able to fight with fire like the other dragons, but he uses his ability to be invisible to stand up to his bullies. Bullying is a frequent occurrence in schools, but it is often not spoken about enough due to the overwhelming number of children's challenges that also need critical intervention or due to the shame and guilt experienced by the target. The Disappearance of Luka sheds light on this vital topic and shows children that being different can be a superpower when you accept and use it to your advantage. This is a well-written, easy-to-read, entertaining, and inspirational storybook for children.

Squire with Fire is a lovely children’s book that discusses the topic of bullying with sensitivity and teaches children important life lessons about their unique abilities. Children will also be enthralled by the twists in the story and will find inspiration from Squire Mackenzie’s courage. The story is expanded by captivating illustrations that children will also love. I loved that the story is led by a young and likable main character that children will easily relate to. I also loved that Luka grows throughout the story as he discovers his superpower and learns how to use it to help his friends. Other characters and their abilities are also fascinating.
