Stingy Jack and the Seven Spirits of Halloween by A.R. Cook is a short Halloween story. Stingy Jack was banished from both heaven and hell and has spent the last 300 years wandering the earth. His only company is a lantern that he carries which was carved from a turnip with an ember demon inside. All Hallows’ Eve is here again, and this year Jack may have discovered a way to end his long punishment. He must travel the length and breadth of Ireland to find 7 spirits and he must take a special item from each one. Sounds simple, right? But not all of them are friendly and if Jack isn’t careful he might not see another All Hallows’ Eve. Will Stingy Jack succeed in his quest or will his attempt fail?

Stingy Jack and the Seven Spirits of Halloween by A. R. Cook is a tale based on Irish legend and is a continuation of the Stingy Jack Halloween tradition. It isn’t suitable for really young readers as it has a few scary scenes. It does have plenty of humor thrown in and is written engagingly in descriptive writing that lets you follow Jack’s adventures. You almost feel as if you are there with him. The characters are amazing, well-developed, and interesting and you will soon feel invested in the outcome. This is an amusing, chilling story that will keep you hooked from the first page and you won’t want to put it down.
