Marko Vukosavovic’s memoir, Stories for My Sons, documents the Vukosavovic family’s history from 1479 to current times. It includes his personal experiences growing up in the former Yugoslavia, his departure from his home country following Yugoslavia’s breakup, and bits of his life in America. The family traces its roots to a noble couple who settled in Sotonići after fleeing from the Ottomans. In 1905, Vukosavovic’s grandfather travels to America but returns after two years. His son, Radomir “Raško” Vukosavovic, fights on Yugoslavia’s side during WWII but after the country’s defeat by the Germans, he joins partisans who form a resistance movement. He goes on to become a professor. Vukosavovic recounts his childhood in former Yugoslavia and his early years in America. He reflects on his experiences and Yugoslavia’s past.

Stories for My Sons covers the complex, fascinating tapestry of events that shaped countries and their people. It contains snippets of captivating historical events that show how Montenegro changed from within and how it was affected by worldwide events. It also includes informative sections about the people’s culture and everyday life. Between wars and events that shatter livelihoods and which cost many people’s lives, the book also contains uplifting moments such as when Vukosavovic remembers joyous moments during his childhood. There are also some humorous scenes that lighten the memoir. I found Stories for My Sons by Marko Vukosavovic not only an absorbing memoir but also an important work that contains valuable lessons that can be learned from the historical events it covers.
