Storm Called is a work of paranormal intrigue, drama and romance penned by author Susan Copperfield. A Royal States novel, this is the earliest work of the chronology and features characters from the rest of the series, but can easily be read as a standalone book. Our central hero is Patrick Laycal, who lives in the Royal States of America where a magical caste system is enforced by those who have power and privilege. Pat is able to sense the emotions of horses, although his usual job is simply to wash dishes and dream of being a chef. But everything goes awry when Pat encounters a princess who is determined to call him into action, whether he wants to or not.

Jessica and Pat are interesting heroes providing larger than life experiences in this high flying paranormal romance with a fabulous magical twist. One thing I particularly enjoyed was how Texan the whole situation still was, from the barbecues to the horses and the attitudes of the characters. With the magical society laid over the old ways of America, the reading experience becomes lavish and exciting on every page, even in its smallest details. Author Susan Copperfield does a wonderful job of layering the romantic moments with other plot elements to present an amusing and exciting story line with plenty to discover, and the characters were easy to root for, and endearing despite their flaws. Overall I’d certainly recommend Storm Called to PNR fans who are looking for something exciting and original as their next read.

Storm Called: A Royal States Novel by Susan Copperfield is a story that surprised me in the most unexpected ways and I loved every single one of them. I enjoyed how much the main characters complemented each other and how well they meshed together. Patrick and Jessica are two very different people, but once they get together, they are ready to take a stand for each other and love each other dearly. Their chemistry was perfect, the plot line was amazing and the little bits of humor simply took the story to the next level.

This is the story of Patrick and Jessica. Patrick was enjoying his life as it was. He loved his cooking and his horses, but he had no idea that his life was about to be changed. Strange circumstances lead him to find a precious princess, Jessica, on his doorstep and she wants his help. Now Patrick is a gentleman, a man who has a kind heart, and he cannot let a woman suffer when she needs his help. Jessica has found her perfect man and she has no plans to let him go. What can Jessica do to make Patrick realize that they belong together?

This was a light hearted, fun and very entertaining novel. I enjoyed how kind and humble Patrick was. He wasn’t a pushover, but he didn’t want to hurt anyone. Jessica is a wildfire who stormed into his life and turned it life upside down. They created a powerful couple, one that made me laugh and enjoy their humor very much!

Storm Called: A Royal States Novel by Susan Copperfield is a beautifully crafted romance with hints of the supernatural. Patrick is the lowest level employee in the company and also affected by the food poisoning that is sweeping through the state of Dallas. But when Jessica, a princess, shows up and asks for his help, he hardly knows what to expect. His life is about to change, and in ways he has never imagined. A princess in dire need of food she can trust and at a time when Patrick is looking for a good job is about to thrust him into the heart of a royal mess where he finds himself fighting not only for his life but for many. A simple request for help has led him too far with the princess, and can he find the courage to let her go? Here is a tale of romance that features magic and a setting in the Royal States of America that readers will love to explore.

While the opening of Storm Called: A Royal States Novel is slow, with the focus on the food poisoning, Patrick’s routine and his interactions at work, it picks up pace when Jessica is introduced and the reader becomes intrigued by her beauty, her simplicity of style and her destiny. The journey of Jessica and Patrick towards attraction for each other isn’t rushed. I loved the way the author writes about the effect Jessica has on Patrick and how the two become closer. The fluidity of the language and the originality in both plot and setting are some of the elements that make the narrative an interesting read. The characters are intricately developed and real, and readers are quickly involved. Susan Copperfield writes from the heart, filling her characters with realism and humanity.
